Hmm... The most realistic analysis I have seen since long, I am happy to see tables are still used although the most common recommendation is to avoid using them for layout and do everything with css and divs (arghh! what a pain, tables can be a life saver :D )
If it takes you nearly half your time to get a site looking right in IE, and if you have to give up CSS and use tables it's time for you to look for a new hobby.

The image doesn't display for me, alas. It sends me to eatliver.com, but then I can't tell which image is the one.
I put a copy of the image on my site and linked to it; eatliver.com just wasn't happy about the deep linking.
