Bad JBoss feedback

I harp on feedback all the time, here's an example of why it's so important.

I've been trying to deploy a new Hypersonic database into JBoss 4.0.2, to contain the data for the Tapestry virtual library demo.

When I deploy my application, here's the exception I get:

I'm still digging around; since I can connect to the database over TCP/IP, it means the problem is in the connection pool. Still, wouldn't it be nice if JBoss told me that? How about if it told me what was broken - where it was broken - how to fix it? That's the kind of support built into Tapestry and HiveMind: line precise exception reporting plus lots of attention to detail in error messages and error reporting in general.

Well, I've been hacking away for a couple of hours, and will probably be at it for a while yet. Not the way I like to spend my day. Sigh.

Try checking that the username in the hsqldb.xml matches the username in login-config.xml. Just offering a possiblity

Did u figure this out Howard??

  3. Never figured it out ... just decided to overwrite the default HSQLDB rather than create a seperate, parallel one for the Virtual Library.

and yet, users of Tapestry/Hivemind find the same problem as you did with JBoss.
For example, I was writing a portlet in Tapestry. Every time I viewed the page I got a nasty exception telling me that "$BasePage_0.date" doesn't exist. But I had my own subclass I was referencing. Yeah, Tapestry told me what line in the .html was involved, but big deal: I could tell that in a second: the one referencing the "date" ivar (duh). But Tapestry didn't tell me that it expected everything about the portlet to have the same identical name (no I don't mean the naming convention where the .html and .java (class) file have the same name, I mean some names in the .xml that configure the portlet and configure Tapestry. Not mentioned in the docs (no surprise there, the docs are thread-bare) no mention in the exception, etc. 4 hours later, just by chance I renamed everything to one name and, suddenly, it works. So the problem is in the nature of the beast: complex systems are complex. The exception management makes lots of assumptions. If it didn't it would have to list out every known cause of every exception and boy would that be confusing. That's, in fact, what docs are for. I just with Tapestry had decent ones.

about HSQL on Jboss TCP "subject" error:
Alter some hours I discovered that you must remove this line from the ds:
    security-domain-and-application HsqlDbRealm /security-domain-and-application

    I also removed this line
    depends jboss:service=Hypersonic,database=localDB /depends
    Now it works for me!
